It’s Day 2 of the Bout of Books 13 Read-A-Thon! Today’s challenge is hosted by Lulo @ Lulo Fangirl. The challenge is to create the ultimate character face-off. Pick two of your all-time favorite characters. They can be from the books you chose for the read-a-thon (or not — totally up to you). Even though they are both your favorite, you HAVE to choose one as the winner. And tell me why. Sell me on why this ONE character is you favorite character of ALL characters.
I almost feel like I need to create a bracket (not unlike the ones for Sweet Sixteen) in order to figure this one out. Actually that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Just finished my bracket and found my ultimate favorite character. I’ll give you guys my breakdown. Get ready for my ultimate character face-off!

Who: If you don’t know who he is, we have a major problem. The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
Pros: Loyal, brave, heart of gold, a toad named Trevor (that’s adorable)
Cons: parents who were tortured until they turned crazy, a scary grandmother with an utterly ridiculous hat
Who: The astronaut who survived alone on Mars, against all odds. The Martian by Andy Weir
Pros: Very smart (he survived in a harsh environment, Mars, when he should’ve died multiple times), practical, survivor, sarcastic smartass (my favorite), he probably won’t want to eat potatoes for a while (I’m not a fan of potatoes)
Cons: Recycled urine (understandable, but still gross)
Who: The soldier that survived too many things and found love. These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner
Pros: Survivor, proficient with weapons, morally sound
Cons: Soldier mindset (I’m imaging that would be grating/a little scary once he’s a civilian)
Winner: Neville Longbottom
Why: I could probably make a case for all 3 of them, but in the end I can’t bet against J.K. Rowling. Neville is a genuinely good guy and I think he’d challenge anyone to be better than they are. With Mark Watney, I’m betting a lot more of my snark would come out (which isn’t always a good thing) and Tarver would make me want to be more of a warrior (which is unnecessary). Neville is just a really great guy that you want to see finish first and meeting his grandmother would definitely be an unforgettable experience.
There you have it! I got really into this character face-off challenge. I had post-it notes all over my desk, outlining my bracket. I was also dancing in my chair and making little noises (including clapping at one point). I should also mention that I did all of this at work, while I should’ve been working. Oh well. It was so much fun!
